A new socioeconomic report, "Skin First: Counting the Cost of Peristomal Skin Complications", reveals that peristomal skin complications (PSCs) cost the NHS in England at least £28.1 million annually. Published just ahead of World Ostomy Day (October 5, 2024), this report emphasises the significant financial and quality-of-life impact of PSCs on ostomates and the healthcare system.

Key findings include:

  • Bullet icon PSCs cost the England economy £28.1 million per year
  • Bullet icon £16.4 million of the total is healthcare costs to the NHS
  • Bullet icon £11.7 million of the total is quality-of-life losses for individuals living with PSCs
  • Bullet icon Avoidable treatment delays account for an additional £5.6M of costs to the economy

The report, supported by Hollister Incorporated, calls for proritising skin health and ensuring timely access to specialist stoma care to reduce these costs and improve patient outcomes. It also highlights the need for better education on recognising healthy peristomal skin and seeking help early.
